About Me

The majority of my research explores issues of mandate responsiveness by political parties in the new democracies of the European Union? Do parties fulfill their election promises and under what conditions? What is the role that media play in facilitating the linkage between party pledges and subsequent government actions? What does this process tell us about the types of democracies emerging in the post-communist countries? Within this theme, I am working on a project evaluating the impact of the political groups of the European Parliament on the agenda of the European Union.

Earlier, I did work (with Daniela Dimitrova, School of Communications, Iowa State University) on how print media in Bulgaria frame news, including those of economic reforms, and on what sources do media outlets rely when publishing election-related news stories. Some of the data collected through this work were subsequently incorporated in my studies on the role of media in pledge prominence and fulfillment. I also have an article assessing the state of media freedom, and that of political communications research across the new member states of the EU.
