About Me

My research focuses broadly on processes of democratization and regime change in sub-Saharan Africa and globally. The dissertation emphasizes the role of affirmative action or gender quotas at the national level as a mechanism for reversing gender imbalances in politics. I investigate how the use of gender quotas varies in democratic and nondemocratic regimes. My case studies are Uganda and Kenya. Other projects include work with the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Project on how elections correlate with democratic transition. Previous research includes projects related to democratization, elections, and economic development in D.R. Congo, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia, and Malawi.
