About Me

My main research interest is in political information and misinformation.  I seek to understand how people come to hold mistaken beliefs about politics and what we can do to address that problem, including things like looking at the efficacy of fact checking. I serve as Political Director for California Speaks or CalSpeaks, which is a California survey research organization.  We focus on political attitudes, political psychology, and issue positions within the California electorate.  I also direct the Project for an Informed Electorate, a non-partisan voter information center devoted to properly informing citizens so that they can get what they need from their government.  I teach Media and Politics, Women and Politics, Political Psychology, Public Opinion, Intro to American Politics, and graduate level Political Behavior. Located in the state capital of California, I also focus on California Politics.

Media Coverage

I have over a decade of experience doing interviews for television, radio, and print.

Television: I have appeared on CNN, as well as all of the local TV stations on many dozens of occasions, both in-studio and in taped interviews.  I have done election night coverage with KCRA in Sacramento, and have partnered with them to do campaign ad watches over the course of several election cycles.

Radio: I have done many live and pre-recorded radio interviews, including Minn. Public Radio’s Kerri Miller Show, and very frequently appear on Sacramento’s Capital Public Radio program Insight.  I have for several years done the live election night coverage for CPR.

Print: I’ve been interviewed for stories in the New York Times, the Globe and Mail, and dozens of print outlets, especially in California.  My work has been featured in stories in the Economist, Le Monde, and Wired.
