About Me

My research focuses primarily on judicial politics. I am especially interested in the Supreme Court opinion writing process, and much of my work examines how the justices negotiate over the content of the legal rules established in majority opinions. I investigate the conditions under which median justices — like the Court’s infamous “swing justice” and the median member of the winning coalition — are pivotal players in the creation of law. More generally, my research examines the hidden, or behind-the-scenes, institutional and collegial processes of Supreme Court decision making.
