About Me

I have a number of research interests. First, I study democratization (when countries go from being authoritarian to being democratic). I am especially interested in the democratization processes in Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan and Egypt, but also in other parts of the world.

I am also interested in social and political movements. Most recently, I have been studying the lawyers’ movement in Pakistan, which overthrew the dictator General Musharraf, and helped to trigger the democratization process in Pakistan.

Another interest is ethnic conflict and nationalism. This is the study of conflict between different ethnic groups. I am particularly interested in such conflicts in Africa and Asia.

Finally, I am interested in gender and sexuality issues in developing countries, especially in Muslim-majority countries.
