About Me:

Dr. Emily Scott is an Assistant Professor of Development at the University of Birmingham and an Associate Fellow of the Centre for International Peace and Security at McGill University. Her research interests are in humanitarianism and development in the Middle East, with a focus on global and local organization, migration, and health politics, as well as conflict and security. Her work has appeared most recently in World Development, The Journal for Global Security Studies, and Deadulus. She is Co-host of the Localization in World Politics podcast and has been a contributor to the New Humanitarian, the Washignton Post, and the Conversation. She has also worked previously in humanitarianism and aid for organizations such as the Canadian International Development Agency's Afghanistan Task Force, the UNDP in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the Carter Center in South Sudan, and Doctors Without Borders in Canada. Dr. Scott is currently writing a book called, Disruptive by Design: Health, Refugees, and Humanitarian Governance in the Middle East, which examines the ways humanitarian boundaries were deliberately transformed by humanitarian organizations and aid workers in response to the War in Syria and refugee crisis in Lebanon and Jordan. She can be consulted on issues of localization, local and global organizational design, attacks on aid and healthcare, the political economy of aid, humanitarianism and development in the Middle East, as well as conflict migration. Emily is also Co-I leading on the climate and human security (climate migration) stream of the BEACON Network.
