My Research:

I study the politics of globalization. Goods and capital cross borders with increasing frequency, but our understanding of the politics of globalization, particularly in the developing world, has not kept pace. My work examines this interaction, looking at the role of international institutions (IOs) in shaping and, in turn, being shaped by, domestic politics. In particular, I take up four topics in the politics of development: (1) the determinants of foreign aid and its effectiveness; (2) the motivation behind and consequences of bilateral investment treaties (BITs); (3) the challenges of investing in human capital; (4) understanding rescues in times of financial crisis.
