About Me:

I work on various questions at the intersection of economics and philosophy, currently focussing on ethics and organizations and ethics in finance. Methodologically, I sit between many chairs and I have come to like the variety. I think of my work as critical, empirically informed social philosophy.

My Research:

My most important books are Inventing the Market. Smith, Hegel, and Political Theory (OUP 2013), which explores the history of ideas to think about the role of markets in society, and Reclaming the System. Moral Responsibility, Divided Labour, and the Role of Organizations in Society (OUP 2018), which explores what it means to be a morally responsible agent when you are a "cog in the wheel". I've also done work on the history of political and economic ideas (sometimes in a US - German perspective) and on the methodology of political theory.
