About Me:

Marcia Godwin, PhD, is Professor of Public Administration  former Master of Public Administration (MPA) Director at the University of La Verne. She has been providing commentary on elections, politics, policy, and local government issues for newspapers that are part of the Southern California News Group since 2013. She has also provided commentary for national media. She has profiled local congressional elections and California senate races as a contributor and current co-editor for The Roads to Congress series on contemporary congressional campaigns. Her research and teaching interests have included elections, public participation, budgeting, ethics, and local government. She also has extensive professional experience in local government administration in a wide range of areas.

My Research:

Research includes elections, local politics, participatory budgeting, local economic development, and policy innovation. Coeditor, The Roads to Congress series (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022). Author or coauthor of chapters on Sen. Kamala Harris (2016), gender and politics (2018), California's 48th Congressional District (2018), Southern California congressional districts (2020), redistricting (2020) and California senate campaign (2024). Research on public engagement and participating budgeting has been published in State and Local Government Review (2014, 2018) and the Handbook of Collaborative Public Management. Collaborative research on harassment and threats against American mayors has been published in Politics, Groups, & Identities and State & Local Government Review. In addition to congressional elections research, recent research includes emotional labor effects on emerging local government managers in communities experiencing protests and threats.
